The ultimate Inspiration for a writer

I hit a wall a few days ago as I was writing the sequel to Rearing Heat, Stallion’s Heat. The one person I always turn to is also my greatest fan, Kimmy.

Not only did Kimmy help me figure out where the characters were going today, but she told me of an email she had gotten a while back about a young lady that showed a quarter horse at the All American Quarter Horse Congress in 2006. You might ask what is so special about that? She showed this horse without a saddle or bridle. She also dedicated this performance to her father she just lost twenty-four days ago. I was raised on a working Quarter horse farm and this video really touched my heart.

Kim Lenox is a paranormal princess...

There is nothing like finding another exceptional author that inspires and enthralls me. Kim Lenox's books do. Her novels of the Shadow Guard, Night Falls Darkly and So Still The Night (and Darker Than Night, coming April 2010), transcend from being a good read to ones that are head and shoulders above the rest.

I found myself running home to delve back into the books, to lose myself within the characters lives and loves. The paranormal elements in Night Falls Darkly and So Still The Night are unbelievably refreshing and cutting edge. Lenox's writing not only is genius, but creates a brilliant canvas for her characters to come alive and rule the pages they breathe life into.

The main male characters are alpha-type men who are sexy, virile, and downright mouthwatering. Even though they are tough, Lenox gives them a vulnerable side that gripped my heart. The female leads are thank gods not-too-stupid-for-words, but women who you and I can relate to. The secondary characters fill-in the story perfectly.

If you are looking for a new author who writes very sensual historical paranormal novels, then Night Falls Darkly and So Still The Night by Kim Lenox should be at the top of your reading pile. She is mine.

Christmas party in the snow...

Yep, it is that time of year again when my company takes us, the employees, to the mountains for our annual Christmas party.

First we settle into our rooms at the hotel. Later we are picked up (no driving since we are drinking). We are treated to a private dinner with an open bar (yeah, with all the drinking going on, it turns out to be a dinner with a show...LOL).

After dinner, the owner hands out our Christmas bonus checks (YAY:).

Next morning, we are taken to the owner's house (he lives in said mountains) and he and his wife make us a fabulous breakfast.

I look forward to this every year and with that said, I am off to start my merriment!

My new toy...

I have been looking for over a year for a new car. I had to have a Chysler Crossfire and I wouldn't settle for less. Finally, a few weeks ago, I found my perfect car and I went for it!

So, here is my angel. I love this car! As my saying goes..."I like my men well hung and my cars low slung." I got my low slung car, and the other is, well, I will leave up to your imagination...LOL.

I finally did it!

I finally went today and got my belly button pierced at the ripe old age of 45! I cannot believe I waited so long. It took about eight minutes total and I walked out with a sparkling belly button.

You are probably asking: Did it hurt? In the time it takes to blink and then it is over. I think getting my blood drawn hurts more than this did.

Dentist and oral surgeon

I finally did it. I wanted all my front teeth re-done before EPICon, nevertheless, getting the dentist and oral surgeon coordinated didn’t happen. Today I spent the day bouncing like a ball between the dentist and oral surgeon. By the time the day ended, I had all new front teeth and the most brilliant white smile I could’ve ever wanted!

I am tired but happy.

Dark Eden Press is closing its doors April 1st, 2008

For the third time in my writing career, a publisher I am with is closing their doors. With Dark Eden Press (DEP), it is because the owner has serious health issue and that I can understand. I wish Debra, the owner, all the best and hope she gets well soon.

I will be looking for new homes for, A Sexual Spark (my one and only first person tale, which Emily Veinglory compared to Laura K. Hamilton in her better days) and An Eternal Bite, a paranormal erotic romance.

Do I get discouraged? Yes for a moment, then I gather myself together and move on. I did this with Mardi Gras Publishing and, in the end, I won the coveted Quasar cover art award with Epic and Freya’s Bower took the series on the first three chapters. I believe things happen for a reason though we might not comprehend them at the time. So here’s to a new future!

EPICon and what a fun time I had!

Here I am Friday morning receiving the Ariana Award for paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi and futuristic erotic cover art for Extraordinary Love.

I am sitting Thursday night with a table full of Amber Quill authors.

Here I am at the ARe champagne celebration Saturday night before the EPICon award's banquet. I am standing with Janet Quinn and Lyndi Lamont.

I have a few more pictures I will be posting, as soon as I learn how to get them off my new camera...LOL.

This being my very first convention, I have to say EPICon was a total blast! The authors I met were friendly and so much fun. Portland, Oregon was a wonderful city and easy to get around in.

I have over 7 years (more like 8) in experience using Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. Creating artwork comes naturally to me. I have been doing it as long as I have been riding horses (that has been since I was a little girl by the way) though back then, I only had Crayons to draw with.

In the next couple of months, I will be opening a separate site for my cover designs called Romance Covers http://www.romancecovers.com/.

I find the challenge of capturing the author’s dream cover exhilarating. Seeing their emails expressing their excitement over the cover I created cannot be put into mere words.

My specialty you might wonder? I can hand paint hair, eye color and backgrounds into readymade photos. This has taken me years to develop, and all those long hours were worth it. If you think it is easy, open up Photoshop CS3. If you have never done it and have almost hundreds of dollars to spare, do. Then be prepared to say HOLY SH*T when you do open up said program. I did when I first opened up PSP 3 or maybe it was 4 back then. The program boggled my mind. I reopened Photoshop a good month later and never looked back. If you love it do it! Whatever that may be.

In this mockup cover I did for Bareback Angels, the two men I have added hair and eye color too. The backgrounds (yes there is more than one background in this cover), I have hand drawn. The lettering (font) is created using the style key in Photoshop. You can buy styles or create your own (think macro and save a string of commands into a one-touch key stroke).

Skylar's book buying frenzy this week

I am home this week recouping from oral surgery (can we say yikes!). I have gone months without diving into some of my favorite foods, and goodness do I like to eat.

Anyway, I have been on this book buying kick the last couple of days. Whose books did Skylar buy?

I started off by buying Lady of Light and Shadows by C. L. Wilson. This author has penned a completely unique and magical realm for her characters. I just started this book, so I will tell you more as I get to know the characters more intimately. Believe it or not, I found this book at my local Walgreens, and I bought the last copy too :)

Yesterday I purchased The Cheater’s Guide To Writing Erotic Romance by Morgan Hawke from Mojocastle Press. I have to say this sharp-minded and plain talking author has my creative juices flowing again. If you are an author just starting out (this isn’t just for erotic authors either) or one like me that already has published works, it never hurts to learn the secrets and tips by the masters like Morgan Hawke. How the heck do you think I have best selling books?...I take classes and read books regularly.

Today I purchased The Red Storm by Zinnia Hope. You can get a copy at Lavender Isis Press. I haven’t started it as of yet, but Zinnia’s voice is soft and sensual, and one that is all her own, that much I do know.

Skylar's cover wins an Ariana at EPIC!

I am very pleased and humbled to announce that my cover art I designed for Extraordinary Love has won in the fantasy, sci-fi, futuristic, and paranormal erotic romance category at EPIC!

This cover now goes on to compete with the other 11 covers to decide the best of the best known as the Quasar, starting January 15 to January 30, 2008.

Side note: Sadly this book was released by Mardi Gras Publishing, which most know the history of that publisher. Extraordinary Love will be coming back out next year, revised and even better! I am glad that this cover won despite the the odds faced when Mardi Gras Publishing suddenly closed it doors and left many authors without homes for their books. This cover was a labor of love, as well as the story it holds.

I just put down A Sexual Spark and all I can say is… WOW!!

That Sin in Sinclair really comes out in this book. This was the most descriptive book I’ve read in a while. Skylar takes not only her characters but you the reader for one wild ride. It seems Loren has seen all kinds at her job as a cocktail waitress for a paranormal bar called Freaks. Then a tall, dark, and dangerous stranger makes her rethink that. He makes her wet with a glance and her scream for more than that before the nights over. She won’t be able to get him out of her head and… Damn it… neither can I. This is a definite recommended read. Five Delightful Divas hands down.

When Loren gets her first look at this mysterious man that oozes sex, all she can think about is hot and nasty. He makes her body sing. All Loren knows is that she needs some of him and soon. Can this man be dangerous since she can't scent him like she can all the other paranormal beings that walk into Freaks? When he gives her just a taste of what he can do Loren knows she doesn't care who he is, she will go anywhere and do anything this man asks just to feel more of his touch, passion. Will this be Loren's downfall, or the night of her dreams?

This story started off with a bang, I flew through the short amount of pages there was and wanted more. These two characters blew me away with the heat between the two and how perfect they are for each other. I sure hope that Ms. Sinclair writes another story with these characters, I can't wait to read what she writes next.

Sensuality combines with great sex to help tell their story of discovery and acceptance. At the end of the story I have to say that Ms. Sinclair got me good. When I turned the last page that is exactly what I thought. In disbelief I quickly reread the story and even knowing the ending I had the same reaction. Purr for Me is a wonderful sexy and sensual story with a truly surprise ending. I Joyfully Recommend this to anyone who enjoys either paranormals or Halloween stories as a keeper.

I woke up Saturday morning to news that MGP (Mardi Gras Publishing) was in trouble. The owner had been offline with computer problems from the beginning of August and to date, is still offline. No new books have been released and the authors are in a panic.

I have eight books with this publisher, along with over 60 covers I have created for authors of MGP. I am one of the lucky ones that was paid for the last quarter, but many have not faired so well, finding out some never have been paid and others had their checks from MGP bounce. All this adds up to big-time trouble for the publisher. Though, I will never recoup any money for July and beyond, I know there are good and responsible publishers in this field and look forward to my books finding their way to those types of publishers.

How could anyone not be attracted, especially tiny but overweight Shayla, completely unaware that Dex was just like her. One has to admit that as a female, we are always concerned about our weight and when this drop dead gorgeous cowboy tells her she's the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, then raging hormones or not, she's ready to take him on.

Ms. Sinclair gives new meaning to the word HOT -- not only were the human couplings torrid but in their shape-shifter form they were equally sensual and realistically erotic from a horse lovers point of view. Yes, if you haven't figured it out yet, I loved this sensual and highly titillating story.

The passion and love between all of the characters is amazing. The passion between Ariella and Kyanite is enough to ignite the page, although the latent attraction that the reader can sense between Apolla and Maximus is pretty intense also. Apolla and Ariella are obviously already as close as sisters as friends can be, and that feeling of trust and love jumps off the page as well. The secondary characters are very well developed and I can't wait for the next story in this series. This story has secrets, magic and passion, three things that make a reader beg for more. As the story moves through the plot it shows how love can indeed conquer all, but that there should never be anything less than honesty between friends and lovers. The author does an amazing job of bringing emotions to life and passion to the forefront. The sex is incredible and it showcases all of the other emotions in the story. The first of a new series, this is a book that should be on everyone's "to buy" list.

This is a great read to say the least. The plotting and enacting of revenge is the sweetest that I have read in a very long time. Dale is definitely a hot Adonis and he knows it and flaunts what he has. Preston is the typical 'I have money and lots of it' type that thinks he can get away with whatever he wants. I loved the interaction between Dale and Preston even though it is under false pretenses. It plays well and the story flows smoothly from the beginning. Ms. Sinclair has brought us another very entertaining read.
